Virginian Tiger Moth (Spilosoma virginica)
The range of this moth is from Canada to Florida and Texas. Another name for this species is Yellow Woolybear. The caterpillars are very variable in color - beige, yellow, dark, red-brown or black. The body is covered in long soft hairs (setae) of variable length - some much longer than the others (more than three body segments in length). Often one long hair is in center of each tuft. Spiracles are white. The mature caterpillars can be found from May through November. They feed on many low-growing plants, woody shrubs and trees.
