Description

Pholiota Mushrooms (genus Pholiota), on the Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina.

Pholiota is a genus of small to fleshy mushrooms, which grow on wood. They have a glutinous cap surface and spores which are brown in deposit. The spores are smooth with a germ pore, although the germ pore can be quite narrow in some species. Most members of the genus Pholiota are wood-rotting saprobes with brown to cinnamon brown or rusty brown spore prints, gills that are attached to the stem but do not run down it, and rings or ring zones. The most commonly collected species are large, showy mushrooms that feature scaly and/or slimy caps.

There are about 20 known species and some of them are edible.
