Garter snakes are always smiling when you look at them sideways, and frowning when you look at them head-on. :)

Actually the last time I saw a garter snake, several years ago, it was hissing at me. I saw it run under me in a park next to where I worked, so I chased after it, whereupon it turned and went behind a small tree, reared up, and hissed at me. I thought, like a boy, about grabbing it, but bothering the wildlife isn't really in me anymore, and I didn't want to get sprayed. I think it was a red-sided garter.
