Dogbane Beetle (Chrysochus auratus)
There are two species in this genus in North America, found primarily east of the Rocky Mountains. C. auratus feeds exclusively on plants in the Dogbane family Apocynaceae, including Apocynum cannabinum and Apocynum androsaemifolium. The larvae are obligate root feeders, and adults eat the leaves of larval host plants.
The Chrysomelinae are a subfamily of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae). There are some 2000 species, found worldwide. The most well-known member is the notorious Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata).
